RMD deadline: when to take it
By December 31 each year. The one exception is your first RMD: it may wait until April 1 of the next year, your required beginning date. Waiting puts two RMDs in that next year. Heirs have no April 1 option.
The tool is set to an owner who turns 73 in 2026, a first RMD year.

A first RMD year, worked
Born in 1953, you turn 73 in 2026. With $250,000 on December 31, 2025, the first RMD is:
$250,000 ÷ 26.5 = $9,433.96
It may wait until April 1, 2027. The 2027 RMD is still due by December 31, 2027, worked from the December 31, 2026 balance, so waiting means two withdrawals in 2027.
