Your first RMD year, by birth year

The SECURE 2.0 Act set the age in two steps. The age that counts is the one you reach on your birthday in that year, so someone born in December 1953 has a 2026 RMD.

    $500,000 ÷ 26.5 = $18,867.92

    Questions people ask next

Is the RMD age 73 or 75?

Both, by birth year: 73 for people born 1951 through 1959, and 75 for people born in 1960 or later.

Does the RMD age apply to an inherited IRA?

No. Heirs follow the beneficiary rules: most take yearly amounts or empty the account within 10 years, whatever their own age. See the inherited IRA rules.

Does a Roth IRA have an RMD age?

No. A Roth IRA has no RMD while its owner is alive. See Roth IRA RMDs.

What if I turn 73 in December?

You still reach 73 that year, so that year is your first RMD year. The first RMD may wait until April 1 of the next year.
